Fort McMurray, Alta – Wood Buffalo RCMP is reminding the community to use extra caution in and around school zones.
Safety tips for drivers:
- Be vigilant of designated school zones and times.
- The posted speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h and it is applicable on school days between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., unless the sign says otherwise.
- Put the phone away. Distracted driving puts everyone in the school zone at greater risk.
- Avoid stopping in travel lanes, crosswalks, intersections, bus zones or other areas where stopping is prohibited.
- Approach crosswalks with caution and yield to pedestrians.
- Keep designated crossings clear so pedestrians can see approaching vehicles and drivers can see pedestrians.
- Children may move unpredictably and can be difficult to see between vehicles. Slow down, expect the unexpected and be prepared to stop.
Safety tips for students and pedestrians:
- Always look both ways before crossing.
- Use designated crosswalks and obey crossing guards.
- Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before stepping onto the road.
- Put away phones and remove headphones while crossing.
- Consider wearing reflective clothing during dark winter months.
